From Hogwarts to Middle-earth Two Magical Nights of Film Music Arrive at Llandaff Cathedral
As part of our ongoing support for live events across South Wales, The Know will be attending two cinematic concert evenings at the breathtaking Llandaff Cathedral this spring, hosted by Red Events and performed by the acclaimed Mystery Ensemble.
First up on May 22nd is a celebration of one of cinema’s greatest musical minds, John Williams. Few composers can claim to have shaped popular culture quite like Williams, whose scores for Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and Superman have become as recognisable as the films themselves.
With more than 70 years in music, five Academy Awards and an astonishing 53 Oscar nominations to his name, Williams has created the soundtrack to generations of moviegoers’ lives. His long-standing collaborations with directors such as Steven Spielberg and George Lucas helped redefine the role of orchestral music in modern cinema, bringing grand symphonic scores back into the mainstream.
Set against the towering architecture and candlelit atmosphere of Llandaff Cathedral, the Mystery Ensemble promises a powerful live performance featuring music from Star Wars, Harry Potter, Home Alone, Memoirs of a Geisha and more. It is easy to see why these concerts have been drawing audiences across Europe.
Then, on June 6th, the ensemble returns with a programme dedicated to The Lord of the Rings. The music of Howard Shore remains one of the most emotionally rich and instantly recognisable film scores ever written, helping bring Tolkien’s fantasy world to life on screen.
From the peaceful charm of The Shire to the haunting presence of Gollum and the sweeping emotion of May It Be, the concert promises a deeply immersive evening for fans of the films and lovers of orchestral music alike.
We’ll be attending and reviewing both performances for an upcoming feature in The Know, but if you’re planning to go, don’t leave buying your tickets too late. These concerts have been selling quickly.
