Social Gaming and Community Building
By Keira Georgeson
It has been widely accepted in the tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPG) community for some time that playing D&D or other tabletop games can help improve mental health. It can also help strengthen community and bring people together who might never otherwise have met. These are just some of the wonderful effects we have seen at The Dice Pit since opening this year; a wonderful mix of people from all walks of life who come to the Pit twice a week to play games together, to use their imaginations, to collaborate on fantastical adventures, and to have fun as a team – regardless of differences.
Part of the reason this has been so special to witness is the fact that our venue is accessible, meaning wheelchair users and those with other mobility issues are able to attend. There are not a lot of spaces in South Wales that run gaming events which are free to attend and have step-free access, so the fact that we can provide this for people who would otherwise miss out means the world to our team and to the people who benefit from this space. The Dice Pit was created to give our community a fresh, inclusive, new gaming hub that anyone and everyone can enjoy for free, and to see it fulfilling that purpose week by week is a joy to behold.
Out in day-to-day life, it’s unlikely that many of our guests would ever meet or know each other, but at The Dice Pit everyone is part of a community fuelled by mutual respect and a mutual love of gaming.
Studies have shown that playing D&D helps to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression by providing healthy escapism and a low-risk, safe environment to express oneself. D&D also helps people to become more creative and forge new social connections through collaborative storytelling, building teamwork skills, and enabling people to try new things in a fictional setting. Building these skills also improves self-esteem and confidence in players.
Here at The Dice Pit, we are proud to be able to facilitate these D&D, Lorcana and Magic The Gathering events and make a positive difference in our community for any and all who wish to attend. Whether someone is completely new to the space or a seasoned veteran, our doors are open every Wednesday and Friday evening and the kettle is on; you are welcome here.
